Accessibility.
The films are for everyone, so the site should be too. This page says how far we’ve got and where to write when it falls short.
What we measure against
We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA, the standard the European Accessibility Act and most national laws point to. We check with an automated scan and a keyboard walk before anything goes live, and we are still learning.
What works
Your settings come first. Text scales with your system size. If you have asked your device for less motion, the films stand still and the Machine’s game is skipped; you get the same pages without the movement.
Everything reaches by keyboard. Tab moves through the page, the films, the posts, the letters and the form. Every stop shows where it is. The Machine’s run takes the arrow keys, W and S, and Escape leaves it.
Screen readers get the structure. The pages are built from landmarks and headings, every control has a name, the counters are labelled, and the footage behind the words is marked as decoration.
Contrast is measured. The quietest text on the black frame measures 5.8 to 1 against a required 4.5 to 1. Over moving pictures the words sit on a dark veil for the same reason.
What we know falls short
The films play silently behind the words and loop. There is no pause button on the page; the system motion setting is the switch. The full films, with sound and their players’ own controls, are on Vimeo and YouTube behind each Watch.
On the story page, the hidden door opens to a pointer held still for two seconds. There is a second way in for people who cannot hold; we keep it quiet because it is part of the game. If you want it, ask.
If something fails
Write to hello@1958.film and say which page and what happened. A person reads it, and we fix what we can.
